Josep Colom studied piano and composition in Barcelona and then in Paris at the École Normale de Musique. Among his many awards are first prize at the Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition (1978) and first prize at the international competitions in Jaén and Épinal.
Since his debut at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris in 1979, he has toured regularly across five continents, giving recitals and concerts with orchestras, and performing chamber music with a wide variety of ensembles and artists.
Highly regarded as a piano and chamber music teacher, he teaches at the University of Alcalá de Henares, the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona, and the Musikeon Higher School (Valencia), and regularly gives master classes.
He made his first recordings in 1982 with the complete Sonatas by Manuel Blasco de Nebra (Etnos), for which he received an award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture. In 1989, he recorded the complete works of Manuel de Falla (Circe), which were praised by Fanfare magazine, followed by the works of Frederic Mompou, the concertos and variations of Johannes Brahms, and works by Fauré, Debussy, Ravel and Brahms in collaboration with pianist Carmen Deleito.
Josep Colom has been a member of the jury for numerous prestigious piano competitions, including the Paloma O’Shea International Piano Competition and the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
Since 2010, he has been teaching regularly in Valencia as part of Musikeon’s postgraduate programmes and giving masterclasses in Spain (Aula de Música de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares), Switzerland (Cours International de Blonay) and France (École Normale de Musique de Paris), among others.
